The Braque Saint-Germain is a medium-sized pointing breed from France, standing about 21 to 24 inches tall and weighing 40 to 58 pounds. It carries a smooth, short coat.
In temperament it is affectionate and loyal, with an even disposition and alert good sense. That mix makes it a congenial companion both in the field and at home, and it tends to get along well with children and other dogs.
The breed traces back to 1800s France, where breeders crossed a Braque Francais with a Pointer. The dogs were first called Compiegne Pointers, after the kennel where they were developed. When that kennel moved to the Saint Germain region, the name changed, and the breed has carried it since.

Nutrition
The Braque Saint-Germain does well on a high-quality dog food, whether commercially manufactured or home-prepared with your veterinarian's supervision and approval. Match the diet to your dog's life stage, whether puppy, adult, or senior.
Some dogs in this breed gain weight easily, so keep an eye on calorie intake and overall weight. Treats are useful for training, but too many can lead to obesity. Learn which human foods are safe for dogs and which are not, and check with your vet about any weight or diet concerns.
Keep clean, fresh water available at all times.
Grooming
Weekly grooming and the occasional bath keep the Braque Saint-Germain's smooth coat clean.
The breed's nails are strong and fast-growing. Trim them regularly with a clipper or grinder to prevent overgrowth, splitting, and cracking.
Check the ears often for wax and debris, which can build up and lead to irritation, and brush the teeth regularly.
Exercise
Give this gundog a regular outlet for its energy. That can be play in a fenced yard or walks several times a day.
Outdoor activities such as swimming, hiking, and retrieving balls or flying discs suit the breed well. Indoor options work too, like hide-and-seek, chasing a ball rolled along the floor, or learning new tricks.
Training for dog sports such as agility, obedience, and rally adds both physical exercise and mental stimulation.
Training
The Braque Saint-Germain is considered easy to train, although individual dogs can differ in how readily they learn. Training should avoid rough handling. In a reward-based routine, wanted behavior is cued and marked, then reinforced with a suitable toy, treat, or other reward. Everyday household rules should give priority to stop and recall cues for safety, with a canine club available as a source of training help.
During the first three months, a puppy's socialization can include varied people, animals, stimuli, and environments. Each exposure should remain safe and be scaled back if excessive fear, withdrawal, or avoidance shows that the puppy is becoming overstimulated.
