About the breed

The Cão de Fila de São Miguel is a determined, intelligent working breed and a medium-sized dog with real strength. Filas have broad heads, straight necks, deep chests, and muscular builds, and they stand 19 to 24 inches tall and weigh 44 to 77 pounds.

Bred to guard and herd cattle, the Fila is loyal and forms tight bonds with its family. These dogs can be wary of strangers and are sometimes territorial, so they do best with experienced pet parents who can give them clear structure.

The breed likely originated on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores region of Portugal, and dates back to the early 19th century. It is a Molosser-type farm dog thought to descend from the now-extinct Terceira Dog. Most Filas still live in the Azores, and the rare breed is only occasionally imported to Europe, North America, and elsewhere.

Nutrition

Filas do well on a high-quality diet formulated for their life stage, whether puppy, adult, or senior. Because they are deep-chested, they may carry a greater risk of bloat (also known as twisted stomach).

A few habits can help lower that risk: split daily food into several meals, use a bowl designed to slow eating, and avoid feeding right before or after vigorous activity. Ask your veterinarian about other options and recommendations.

Any dog can gain too much weight from overeating. To help your dog hold a healthy weight, measure portions and watch how many treats you hand out. As a guideline, treats should make up no more than 10 percent of daily calories.

Grooming

Weekly brushing and the occasional bath keep the Fila's short coat in good shape. Check the ears regularly and clean them as needed to clear wax and debris, which helps lower the chance of ear infections.

Trim the nails regularly. For dental care, set up an at-home program with regular teeth brushing and veterinarian-recommended dental chews, alongside professional cleanings.

Exercise

A mature adult Cão de Fila de São Miguel should have daily walks alongside opportunities to run, play, and explore. The amount and safe form of exercise should be set for the individual dog and discussed with a veterinarian, along with suitable environmental enrichment. Mental stimulation also belongs in the adult routine. Treasure hunts and hide-and-seek can add mental work.

For a puppy up to 12 months, lead practice can continue, but it should not become a strenuous or very long walk over difficult terrain. Free running or play is preferable to forced prolonged exercise at that stage, and a veterinarian or breeder should guide increases in intensity.

Training

An adult Cão de Fila de São Miguel should have everyday household rules. Stop and recall should be safety priorities, while positive methods are used instead of force. A canine club can provide advice if further help is needed.

For a puppy, early sessions can build familiarity with a collar or harness and with walking on a lead. Housetraining should return the puppy regularly to one chosen toilet area, praising success rather than punishing accidents. During the first three months, socialization can introduce varied people, animals, stimuli, and environments, with exposure reduced if excessive fear, withdrawal, or avoidance appears. Positive reinforcement should carry through both classes and practice at home, using frequent praise, petting, play, or treats as rewards.
