About the breed

The English Shepherd is a hardworking, intelligent farm dog and a devoted family pet. It is medium-sized and alert, built for speed and agility, with a sturdy, balanced body and even proportions. Adults stand about 18 to 24 inches tall and weigh roughly 35 to 65 pounds.

Gentle by nature, the breed gets along well with children and other animals. A natural herding instinct may lead these dogs to corral family members, and they can be wary of strangers, though they usually warm up to newcomers given a little time.

The name misleads, because the English Shepherd is an American original. The breed likely descends from English and Scottish herding dogs that early settlers brought to North America. Bred as all-around farm dogs, they herded sheep and cattle, hunted vermin, and guarded property.

The breed was widely used in the United States through the 19th and early 20th centuries and was recognized in 1927. As farming grew larger and more specialized, their skills mattered less and their numbers fell. Today they are less common than herding dogs such as the Border Collie and Australian Shepherd.

Care

The routines that matter most for this breed. Open one at a time.

Nutrition

English Shepherds do well on a high-quality diet formulated for their life stage and energy level. Puppy, adult, and senior formulas serve different needs, so match the food to where your dog is in life.

Watching weight matters, since extra pounds can open the door to other health challenges. To help your dog hold a healthy weight, measure portions to avoid overfeeding and account for treats too.

As a guideline, keep treats to no more than 10% of daily calories.

Grooming

English Shepherds need regular brushing to keep the coat in good shape, especially during seasonal shedding. Brushing a few times a week pulls loose hair and keeps tufts from drifting across your floors.

Make ear cleanings and nail trims part of a monthly grooming routine. For teeth, set up an at-home routine with regular brushing alongside professional cleanings, since dental care is part of keeping an adult dog healthy.

Exercise

English Shepherds are athletic, high-energy dogs. They need a lot of exercise to stay content during the day and calm and relaxed at night. Long walks, jogs, trail hikes, and backyard play sessions all help them work off pent-up energy.

Like most herding dogs, they thrive with a job to do. Without enough physical and mental activity, English Shepherds may dig through trash, chew household items, or develop other unwanted behavior.

English Shepherds can perform well in agility and other canine sports. Their high energy and exercise needs make the breed a poor fit for apartments or low-activity households.

Training

English Shepherds are very intelligent, which cuts both ways in training. They learn obedience commands and tricks quickly, but they may also hold strong opinions about how things should go.

Firm, consistent training works through that stubborn streak. Win their respect, and the rest falls into place.

Socializing your dog early helps it grow into a well-mannered adult.

Health conditions

3 conditions are documented for the English Shepherd.

A predisposition is not a diagnosis. Ask your vet which screenings make sense for your dog's age.
