The Estonian Hound is a happy, friendly dog and an energetic hunting companion. Medium-sized with a strong, muscular build, it stands about 17 to 20 inches tall and weighs 33 to 44 pounds, with a typical lifespan of 12 to 15 years.

These hounds love attention and form tight bonds with their people, which makes them devoted, affectionate family dogs. They are gentle and playful with kids and get along well with other dogs, though cats can take a little getting used to. Despite the hunting drive, they have a laid-back side and are just as content with a cuddle session on the couch.

The Estonian Hound is a newer breed and the only one developed in Estonia. In 1947, the Soviet Union's Ministry of Agriculture and Economy declared that every country in the union should have its own dog breed, favoring smaller, more agile hunting dogs less likely to endanger Estonia's shrinking wildlife. Breeders crossed local hunting dogs with Beagles and other hounds, and the Ministry approved the breed standard in 1954.

After Estonia regained its independence, it named the breed its national dog. The Estonian Hound remains popular with both hunters and families there today.

Nutrition

Estonian Hounds do well on a high-quality diet formulated for their life stage, whether puppy, adult, or senior. Foods made specifically for medium-breed dogs are also a strong option to consider.

To help your dog hold a healthy weight, measure their portions to avoid overfeeding and keep an eye on treats. As a guideline, treats should make up no more than 10% of a dog's daily calories.

Grooming

Estonian Hounds are moderate shedders. They need weekly brushing to remove loose fur, plus an occasional bath to stay clean and tidy.

Check your dog's ears regularly and clean them as needed to clear wax build-up and debris, which helps reduce the chance of infection. Trim the nails regularly, since overgrown nails can cause pain and make running or walking difficult.

Good dental hygiene supports your dog's overall health, and dental disease is one of the most common conditions in adult dogs. Along with professional cleanings, set up an at-home routine that includes regular teeth brushing and veterinarian-recommended dental chews.

Exercise

Estonian Hounds are energetic dogs that need at least an hour of exercise a day. They enjoy long walks and hikes and love the chance to run in large, fenced areas.

This is a scent hound at heart, happiest following a trail. That instinct serves them well for hunting but can pull them off course on family outings, so keep your dog on a leash outdoors to prevent wandering. They are also well-suited for dog sports such as agility, scent tracking, rally, and competitive obedience.

Training

These intelligent, eager-to-please dogs are typically easy to train. A consistent approach and positive reinforcement, using treats or favorite toys as rewards, works well for this breed.

Estonian Hounds also benefit from early socialization. Getting your dog comfortable with different people and environments while young helps them grow into a confident, well-mannered adult.
