The Istrian Short-haired Hound is a medium-sized scenthound from Croatia, part of the FCI scenthound group. It stands about 19 to 21 inches tall and weighs roughly 35 to 50 pounds, with a strong body and a noble look. Most live around 12 to 15 years.

At home these hounds are calm and laid-back, but in the field they become lively and enthusiastic, with a strong, persistent bark. They are gentle and deeply attached to their people, loyal and obedient, though often wary of strangers.

The breed traces back to at least the 1300s. Four dogs resembling the Istrian Hound appear on the capitol column of the Franciscan monastery in Dubrovnik, and similar hounds turn up in cemetery-chapel and church paintings from the late 1400s. Experts believe the breed descends from an ancient east Adriatic white hound, and people long used these dogs to hunt rabbits and foxes in the rough, stony mountains of Istria. Today the breed is rare, found mostly in its native land.

Care

The routines that matter most for this breed. Open one at a time.

Nutrition

Feed a high-quality diet matched to your dog's life stage, whether puppy, adult, or senior. A healthy adult Istrian typically weighs around 35 to 50 pounds, so measure portions to avoid overfeeding and keep an eye on how many treats you hand out.

As a simple guideline, treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog's daily calories. Monitor portions and treats together to help your dog hold a healthy weight.

Grooming

The short coat is low-maintenance. Weekly brushing to remove loose fur and dirt, plus the occasional bath, generally keeps it in good shape.

Check the ears regularly and clear any wax buildup or debris, which helps reduce the chance of ear infections. Trim the nails as part of the routine, since overgrown nails are painful and can make running and walking difficult.

Dental care matters too. Dental disease is one of the most common conditions in adult dogs, so build an at-home habit of regular teeth brushing alongside professional cleanings and veterinarian-recommended dental chews.

Exercise

The Istrian Short-haired Hound is a high-stamina hound used for hunting and tracking on a lead. Daily walking should be part of the adult routine, with the amount matched to the individual dog; play can supplement the walk but should not replace it.

During walks, effective control can mean keeping the dog on a lead. If the dog is ever walked without one, the handler should remain aware of its actions and be able to call it back reliably and promptly.

Training

Istrian Hounds are devoted, obedient, and easy to train. Reward-based methods with plenty of praise suit them well.

Istrian Hounds benefit from early socialization. Introducing your puppy to different people and environments while young helps them grow into a confident, well-mannered adult. Because the breed can be wary of strangers, early, positive introductions are especially worthwhile.
