The Manchester Terrier (standard) is a small terrier from the United Kingdom, recognized in 1887 and a member of the Terrier Group. Standing 15 to 16 inches and weighing 12 to 22 pounds, it carries the same temperament, body type, and athletic build across the breed.

The coat is the breed's signature: tight, smooth, and short, in rich mahogany tan and jet black. The head is long and wedge-shaped, with tan spots above each eye that lift the expression into something watchful.

This dog can move. It runs with good reach in front and strong rear drive, powered by a well-muscled rear. Bright, spirited, and keenly observant, the Manchester pairs that athleticism with a sharp, alert mind.

Nutrition

The Standard Manchester Terrier needs a diet suited to its age and activity level. This breed may overeat and gain weight quickly. Controlled portions help guard against obesity. Fresh water should remain available.

Grooming

The Manchester is an easy keeper, a wash-and-wear kind of dog. An occasional bath with a shampoo formulated for dogs keeps it looking dapper, and a weekly wipe-down with a damp towel or a hound glove gives the smooth coat a healthy shine.

Trim the nails every couple of weeks to keep the joints in proper alignment. Clean the ears regularly to clear excess wax or debris that can otherwise cause discomfort.

The Manchester's short coat keeps the grooming routine straightforward.

Exercise

Active, swift, and athletic, the Manchester needs a couple of good walks with its person each day to stay happy and in good shape. That daily activity supports both its physical and mental wellbeing.

The Manchester Terrier (standard) is just as content relaxing on the sofa with its owner as it is heading outside to chase a few tennis balls or run around and play hard. A breed this athletic appreciates the chance to stretch out and burn energy.

Training

The Manchester is intelligent and likes to think its way through every situation. The Manchester Terrier (standard) enjoys pleasing its people and trains easily with positive, reward-based methods. Harsh corrections backfire, so keep sessions fun and full of praise for a job well done. Socialize it well and early.

This breed has the drive for a wide range of dog sports: obedience, rally, agility, lure coursing, barn hunt, earthdog, tracking, flyball, scent work, even freestyle dancing. They want the challenge, and the variety keeps a sharp mind engaged.
