The Pudelpointer is a medium-sized German hunting dog, bred as a capable, all-around hunter. It stands about 22 to 26 inches tall and weighs roughly 45 to 70 pounds, with a typical lifespan of 10 to 14 years.
Its coat lies close over a dense undercoat, with the outer coat running 0.75 to 2.5 inches. The breed standard accepts two textures: a shorter wire coat that feels harder to the touch, and a longer rough coat that feels softer. A coat under 0.75 inches is not acceptable for breeding. The look is practical and field-ready rather than fussy.
Temperament runs friendly, smart, and willing to please. That mix of brains and eagerness, paired with a strong working background, makes the Pudelpointer a steady companion for an active household.

Nutrition
Feed a Pudelpointer twice a day, morning and evening. Puppies need to eat more often, at least three meals a day. Match the food to the life stage: puppy food for puppies, adult food after a year, and senior food for older dogs. Whichever food you choose, make sure it meets the nutritional standards set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO).
Portion size varies, so start with the guidelines on the packaging. Your veterinarian can help you set amounts based on your dog's ideal body weight, lifestyle, and life stage. Pudelpointers can gain weight if they overeat, so measure portions and limit treats. For fast eaters, a slow-feeder bowl helps prevent gastrointestinal upset.
The Pudelpointer is a healthy breed that meets its daily needs on high-quality food. As long as the diet is AAFCO-approved, your dog should not need supplements. If your dog has hip dysplasia, your veterinarian may recommend a joint supplement or a prescription joint diet to help reduce inflammation.
Grooming
The Pudelpointer sheds seasonally. Weekly brushing removes loose hair and prevents matting. The breed does not need a professional groomer or special skin care.
Bathe your dog when the coat is dirty or has an odor, particularly after a day in the field or woods. Because these dogs love the outdoors, check the skin for ticks regularly and stay current on heartworm and flea and tick prevention.
Pudelpointers are not prone to frequent ear infections, but one can develop occasionally, especially after water gets in the ears from swimming or hunting waterfowl. Clean the ears with a routine cleaner that contains a drying agent after a bath or any water activity.
Trim the strong, fast-growing nails regularly with a clipper or grinder to avoid overgrowth, splitting, and cracking. Nails that get too long cause pain and can lead to trouble running or walking, including splits during field work or dog sports. Keep up dental hygiene with professional cleanings plus an at-home routine of regular brushing and veterinarian-recommended dental chews. The breed has no special eye needs, but contact your veterinarian if you notice changes such as redness or discharge.
Exercise
As a hunting breed, the Pudelpointer needs a fair amount of daily exercise, at least two hours a day to spend its energy and stay mentally engaged. Long walks, hikes, and games of chase in a fenced backyard all help. This breed loves the water, so swimming and retrieving balls or flying discs are good outlets.
Indoor activities work too, such as hide-and-seek, chasing a ball rolled along the floor, or learning new tricks. Pudelpointers also take well to dog sports like agility, rally, and competitive obedience.
These dogs carry a lot of energy and thrive when they have a job. A fitting home has a large fenced backyard for running, with a pet parent or family who takes them on outdoor adventures or enrolls them in training and sporting events. Mental and physical stimulation keep boredom away and keep them fit, so the breed does not suit laid-back lifestyles.
Training
Pudelpointers are intelligent, eager to please, and generally easy to train. A positive, reward-based approach with favorite toys or treats keeps them engaged and responsive. Their working background as all-around hunters gives them an eager, energetic temperament and a love of having a job to do.
Socialize your puppy young to help it grow into a well-adjusted adult. Well-socialized Pudelpointers can do well around other dogs and around children who know how to interact with animals.
Their long history as hunters gives them a strong prey drive, so they may not do well around small animals such as cats or pocket pets like guinea pigs. Introduce smaller pets slowly and carefully, and always supervise your dog outdoors.
If you decide to take your Pudelpointer hunting, follow proper safety precautions and train your dog to be comfortable in the field.
