The Romanian Raven Shepherd is a giant landrace breed, one of four native livestock guardian dogs from the Carpathian Mountains and sub-Carpathian regions of south central Romania. It earned its name from its mostly black coat, called Corb in Romanian.
Standing 26 to 31 inches tall and weighing 99 to 130 pounds, the Raven has a proud, commanding presence, with males running larger and stronger than females. It carries natural guardian instincts and a booming bark, working calmly and with courage while bonding closely as a family companion. Ravens are skeptical of strangers, devoted to familiar people, and playful at home.
The breed has long protected flocks during transhumance, the seasonal movement of livestock between winter and summer pastures, sharing the land with wolves, bears, and lynx without significant losses to either side. Free-ranging Ravens are required by law to wear a dangle, or jujau, a stick hung from a chain at the neck that marks them as a shepherd's dog and discourages them from chasing wildlife.
The Raven occupies a small geographic area but has a large population. The breed was recognized in 2024 and is placed in FCI Group 2.

Nutrition
Puppies may do well on a large-breed growth diet. These foods are formulated to keep big dogs like the Raven from growing too fast, and slower, steadier growth may lower the likelihood or severity of hip issues as the dog ages.
Once grown, Ravens do well on a high-quality food matched to their age and activity level. Measure each meal and limit treats to reduce excess weight in Romanian Raven Shepherds.
As a guideline, keep treats to 10 percent or less of daily calories to help this giant breed hold a healthy weight.
Grooming
Ravens rarely need baths. Brush the coat weekly to clear loose fur and dirt, and brush more often during seasonal shedding.
Clean the ears and trim the nails regularly. For teeth, set up an at-home dental program with regular brushing and veterinarian-recommended dental chews alongside professional cleanings.
Exercise
For an adult Romanian Raven Shepherd, walking should be part of the daily routine, with the amount and pace matched to the individual dog's abilities. Activity should stop short of demands beyond the dog's capacity. Slow, sniffing walks can add exploration, while play and brain games provide mental activity without replacing walking.
Varied dog sports can offer structured physical and learning activity when they suit the individual dog. Treasure hunts or hide-and-seek are other ways to provide daily mental stimulation. During outings, control can come from a lead; if the dog is ever off lead, the handler should remain aware of its actions and have reliable prompt recall.
Training
Training for a Romanian Raven Shepherd should use positive methods without force. Everyday household rules should be clear, with stop and recall cues treated as safety priorities. A handler can cue and mark a wanted behavior, then reinforce it with a toy, treat, or another suitable reward. Communication should be understandable to the dog, and expectations should reflect an objective assessment of its individual capacity.
For a Romanian Raven Shepherd puppy, socialization during the first three months can include varied people, animals, settings, and stimuli. Exposure should slow if the puppy shows excessive fear, withdrawal, or avoidance.
