Nutrition
The Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka does well on a high-quality dog food. Commercial or home-prepared diets both work, with any home-prepared meals made under your veterinarian's supervision and approval. Match the diet to your dog's life stage, whether puppy, adult, or senior, and keep clean, fresh water available at all times.
Some Bolonki gain weight easily, so watch calorie intake and body condition. Treats are useful for training, but too many can lead to obesity, so keep them modest.
Learn which human foods are safe for dogs and which are not, and check with your vet if you have any questions about your dog's weight or diet.
Grooming
Brush or comb the coat with a wide-tooth comb several times a week to prevent mats. Dogs kept in full coat may need the face, mustache, and beard washed daily. For the show ring, no trimming beyond the feet is allowed, the coat on the back falls naturally, and it is not deliberately parted.
Check the eyes and ears often for foreign matter, injury, and irritation. Keeping the eyes clean and clear is helpful, since hair in the eyes can cause irritation that leads to painful corneal scratches and ulcers. Tying the hair into a bow on top of the head keeps it out of the eyes. Drop ears can stay healthier when kept clean and dry, especially after bathing or swimming.
Start at-home teeth brushing and professional cleanings while Bolonki are puppies.
Exercise
Bolonki enjoy walks and playtime but do not need a great deal of exercise. They can be energetic and play-driven, so aim for a good romp at least twice a week. Walks around the block, trips to the dog park, and time exploring a fenced yard all suit them.
Indoor games work well too. Hide-and-seek, chasing a ball rolled across the floor, fetch, and learning new tricks all help these little dogs burn energy.
Puzzle toys and games keep this clever breed engaged. Bolonki may also enjoy competitive obedience, rally, tracking, or agility.
Training
Early socialization with people matters for Bolonki. Regular socialization keeps them comfortable with unfamiliar people, pets, and places. They are friendly with children and other animals, though supervision is always wise.
This breed is clever and independent, a combination that can make training a challenge. A consistent program built on positive reinforcement and rewards gives a good foundation for basic commands and new tricks. Handled with a firm but gentle hand, Bolonki take well to structured dog sports.
They also like to alert you to everything around them, so it can help to teach them when vocalizing is appropriate.
