Origin

The Segugio Italiano is a medium-sized scent hound from Italy, bred for hunting and built for stamina. It stands about 19 to 24.5 inches tall and weighs roughly 39 to 62 pounds, with an elegant, fleet-footed stride. The name is said Say-gu-joe Italiano.

Its nature is willing, intelligent, gentle, and docile, which makes it a good companion for people of all ages. The breed is attentive to its owner and has a loyal temperament.

Well-mannered and vigilant, the Segugio Italiano is an alert watchdog over both home and owner. It is neither aggressive nor shy, but courageous with a cautious streak rather than a bold one. It adapts to most living situations as long as it gets enough mental and physical activity.

The breed comes in two coat types: the short-haired Pelo Raso and the wire-haired Pelo Forte. The coat is either fawn or black and tan, with very little white visible.

Care

The routines that matter most for this breed. Open one at a time.

Nutrition

Feed a complete, balanced diet suited to your dog's age and activity level. For a working or highly active Segugio Italiano, a high-protein, lower-fat food made for performance dogs supports the energy it burns.

For a less active dog, ask your veterinarian to help match the diet to its activity level so it holds a healthy weight. Keep fresh, clean water available at all times.

Grooming

Both coat varieties are easy to keep. Brushing once or twice a week is enough for either the smooth or wire coat. It keeps the coat clean, removes loose hair before it builds up, and keeps shedding modest.

The long ears need regular attention. Clean them, keep them dry, and flip them over often to let air into the canals. Long, low-hanging ears can trap debris or wax, so check them and clean as needed.

Trim nails as needed. For dental care, check the teeth regularly for plaque and build an at-home routine of brushing alongside professional cleanings. Dental chews and toys can help too.

Exercise

The Segugio Italiano has high energy and stamina, so plan for roughly a couple of hours of activity a day to keep it physically and mentally fit. A brisk 30 to 45 minute walk plus one to two hours of free roaming works well.

For apartment dwellers, regular trips to the dog park help. In active homes, two or three major outings a week paired with lighter activity on other days will do. Brisk walks, dog park visits, and backyard scent games all burn off energy.

Games and dog sports give the breed a job to focus on. Agility, competitive obedience, and rally provide both exercise and mental work.

Training

The Segugio Italiano is eager to please and learns quickly, and it responds best to a firm, consistent handler. Steady technique keeps training sessions smooth.

Early socialization helps prevent a shy or timid hound and shapes a well-mannered adult. As with many hounds, keep your dog on lead anywhere that is not securely fenced, since a scent can pull it off course.
