Origin
Slovakia

The Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer is a medium-sized sporting breed from Slovakia. It stands about 22.5 to 26.5 inches tall and weighs 50 to 65 pounds, with a lifespan of 12 to 15 years.

Its signature feature is a wiry, short coat the breed standard calls grey, with hair that is harsh and hard to the touch. The build is athletic and made for work, fit enough to range across the plain, through the woods, and into the water.

This is a hunting dog at heart. After the shot, it searches for and retrieves wounded game. The breed is energetic, outgoing, affectionate, and suited to work and home life.

Care

The routines that matter most for this breed. Open one at a time.

Nutrition

Like most high-energy sporting breeds, the Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer does well on a nutrient-dense diet, especially during active working seasons. Its needs shift across life stages, so a working adult eats differently from a puppy or a more sedentary pet.

These dogs are very food-oriented, which is handy for training but easy to overdo. Keep an eye on calorie intake and weight, and adjust portions to your dog's activity level to keep them in good shape.

Grooming

The wiry coat needs only minimal grooming to stay in good condition. Between baths, a wipe-down with a damp cloth is usually enough to keep your dog looking tidy. During shedding season, a grooming mitt or shedding knife lifts loose hair and cuts down on what ends up around your home.

Trim the nails about every four weeks. Long nails can be painful and make running or walking awkward, so keep trims part of the routine.

Start dental care early. Dental disease is one of the most common health issues in adult dogs, so brush the teeth at home, offer veterinarian-recommended dental chews, and keep up with professional cleanings.

Exercise

The breed needs substantial daily exercise. It can join its owner for hikes, bike rides, or jogs. Provide daily walks and regular opportunities to run in a secure area.

The hunting instinct runs strong, so a dog will follow the urge to chase. Keep off-leash time to a securely fenced area, especially around small neighborhood animals.

Training

Lively, happy, and eager to please, the Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer is intelligent and quick to learn. It wants to work with its people, which makes it very trainable.

All that energy comes with a short attention span, and these dogs bore quickly, which can make training tricky. Keep sessions short and interactive. Use positive reinforcement with clear, consistent cues and boundaries. Skip harsh words and physical punishment.

They bond strongly with their families and can develop separation anxiety without proper conditioning. Socialize your dog while young to help them grow into a well-mannered, confident adult.
