Nutrition
The Slovensky Kopov does well on a high-quality dog food, whether commercially manufactured or home-prepared with your veterinarian's supervision and approval. Match the diet to the dog's life stage: puppy, adult, or senior.
Some dogs in this breed tend toward extra weight, so keep an eye on calorie intake. Treats help with training, but too many can lead to weight gain, so use them in moderation.
Learn which human foods are safe for dogs and which are not, and check with your vet if you have any concerns about your dog's weight or diet. Keep clean, fresh water available at all times.
Grooming
The Slovensky Kopov has a short, close-fitting coat that needs only occasional brushing. The undercoat is dense, so the breed sheds seasonally; brush more often during that stretch. An occasional bath keeps the coat clean.
The nails are strong and fast-growing. Trim them as needed with a clipper or grinder to avoid overgrowth, splitting, and cracking.
Check the ears now and then for wax and debris, and brush the teeth regularly.
Exercise
The Slovensky Kopov is a scent hound used for sustained hunting and tracking work. In hunting areas, keep walks on lead; tracking practice uses a long lead. Lead handling, remaining at a station, and stay exercises are foundations for field work, and the handler should understand the individual dog before beginning that training.
Outside field work, fenced play and several daily walks offer regular exercise. Indoor options include hide-and-seek, chasing a ball rolled along the floor, and learning new tricks. Swimming, hiking, retrieving, and training for dog sports can add variety.
