About the breed

Origin
Australia

The Tenterfield Terrier is a small working dog that is outgoing, affectionate, and suited to family life. Standing 10 to 12 inches tall and weighing 8 to 12 pounds, it carries an intelligent, alert expression and a confident, fearless attitude when there is a job to do.

At home, Tenterfields are friendly, adaptable, lively, attentive to their owners, and often compatible with other dogs and children. Like most terriers, they carry a strong prey drive and tend to give chase, so they may not suit households with cats or other small pets.

The breed descends from miniature Fox Terriers that traveled with English settlers to Australia in the 1800s. Their small size and sharp vermin-hunting skills made them valued shipmates on the long voyage, and in Australia they earned their keep as ratters and family pets across New South Wales, particularly the Tenterfield district. Owners set up a breed registry in the early 1990s, first calling the dogs Mini Foxies before settling on Tenterfield Terrier to avoid confusion with the Smooth Fox Terrier. The Tenterfield Terrier Club of Australia formed in 1993, and the Australian National Kennel Council recognized the breed nine years later.

Care

The routines that matter most for this breed. Open one at a time.

Nutrition

Tenterfield Terriers do well on a high-quality dog food formulated for their life stage. With a small frame of 8 to 12 pounds, portions add up quickly, so measure meals to help your dog hold a healthy weight rather than free-feeding.

Keep an eye on treats, which should make up no more than 10% of daily calories. Track both meals and treats to maintain a healthy weight.

Grooming

The Tenterfield's short coat is easy to care for. Brush every couple of weeks to clear loose fur, and give an occasional bath to keep the coat clean and healthy.

Check the ears regularly and clean them as needed to clear wax and debris, which helps lower the chance of ear infections. Keep nails trimmed too, since nails that grow too long cause discomfort and can make walking or running harder.

Dental care rounds out the routine. Dental disease is common in adult dogs, especially small breeds like the Tenterfield, so brush the teeth regularly and pair that with veterinarian-recommended dental chews and professional cleanings.

Exercise

The active, hardy breed needs regular exercise. Provide daily walks, backyard play, and games of fetch.

Tenterfields are clever and can turn destructive when bored, so give them a job to do. Puzzle and chew toys help keep their minds busy, especially when they are home alone.

Training

Early, consistent obedience training with a positive, reward-based approach suits this clever, eager breed. They are confident and quick to learn, which makes steady routines pay off.

Socialization matters too. Introduce puppies to different people, environments, children, and dogs while young.

Health conditions

3 conditions are documented for the Tenterfield Terrier.

A predisposition is not a diagnosis. Ask your vet which screenings make sense for your dog's age.
