The Mini is the middle of PetMD's three Bernedoodle tiers, standing up to 22 inches and weighing 20 to 45 pounds. It lives 14 to 16 years, a year or two more than the Standard, and carries the same low-shedding coat.

The Mini Bernedoodle is a Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle cross that grows to 20 to 45 pounds and up to 22 inches tall. PetMD gives its lifespan as 14 to 16 years, against 12 to 15 for the Standard, which is a real gap rather than a rounding difference.

Doodle generation labels matter more here than most owners expect. An F1 Bernedoodle has one Bernese and one Poodle parent; an F1b has a Poodle parent and an F1 Bernedoodle parent. The higher the number the further the dog sits from the simple first cross, and it is a fair question to ask a breeder.

Temperament is the selling point. These are loving, kind dogs, goofy and playful with a gentle streak from the Bernese side, comfortable with children, happy romping with other dogs and gentle with cats. They are quiet, barking mainly at surprises or in play.

The coat is low-shedding and low-allergen and has earned the breed a hypoallergenic reputation it cannot fully live up to, since no dog is. A Mini fits an apartment comfortably, and a well-exercised one fits almost any family.

Care

The routines that matter most for this breed. Open one at a time.

Nutrition

Feed a food whose label carries an Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) nutritional adequacy statement, which is what tells you it is complete and balanced, and ask your vet if you are unsure which brand to pick for a Mini Bernedoodle.

A Mini Bernedoodle puppy wants three or four meals spread across the day on a fixed schedule, dropping to two once it is grown. One meal a day is technically enough but produces anxiety and food fixation, and twelve-hour intervals suit both the metabolism and the mood better.

How much depends on your dog rather than on the tier. Size, health and lifestyle all move the number, and a 20-pound Mini and a 45-pound one are not on the same plan. Agree the amount with your vet.

A slow feeder helps a fast eater. Supplements are not needed on a balanced diet, but some Bernedoodles benefit from joint supplements against hip and elbow dysplasia, which is a conversation to have with your vet rather than a default.

Grooming

The Bernese and Poodle combination produces a coat that needs consistent brushing, and PetMD puts it bluntly: this is not a low-maintenance breed. Plan on brushing your Mini Bernedoodle every week and booking regular professional grooming to keep the coat tangle-free and from growing unruly.

How much a given dog sheds varies. A Mini that takes after its Bernese parent will drop more hair than one that takes after the Poodle, and the coat that sheds less is usually the one that mats more.

Bathe when your dog is too dirty to leave, and no more than once a month, since more than that dries the skin out. Daily tooth brushing with dog toothpaste keeps plaque down.

Eyes need no special routine beyond keeping hair clear of them, with cloudiness, redness or discharge worth a call. Ears need cleaning every time your dog has been in water, which for a breed that loves to swim is often.

Exercise

At least two walks a day is the standing requirement for a Mini Bernedoodle, and this size can take a decent distance on each of them.

Mental stimulation matters just as much: games, snuffle mats and puzzle toys are part of what the breed needs, and a dog that has been walked but not kept thinking is only half exercised.

Hiking, running, swimming, agility, trick training and obstacle courses all suit the breed, and the Mini has the reach for most of them without the joint load the Standard carries. This is the tier with the widest range of realistic activities.

Given the exercise, the breed is genuinely adaptable. A Mini Bernedoodle is equally content on a sofa and in a yard with children and other pets, which is most of why the size is popular.

Training

Intelligent and eager to please describes a Mini Bernedoodle well. Basic cues, tricks, crate training and house training all come quickly with positive reinforcement.

Get the leash work in early. Bernedoodles love long walks and will take a lot of them, so the walk is either a pleasure or a chore for the next fifteen years depending on what you teach in the first few months.

Early and consistent training with a good breeder behind the dog is what produces the sweet, happy adult the breed is known for. None of it is difficult; all of it is regular.

Introductions are easy with this cross. Mini Bernedoodles are comfortable around children, enjoy other dogs and are gentle with cats, so socialisation is more about breadth of experience than about managing risk.

Health conditions

3 conditions are documented for the Mini Bernedoodle.

A predisposition is not a diagnosis. Ask your vet which screenings make sense for your dog's age.

May inherit from parent breeds

These conditions are documented in the parent breeds, not in this cross itself. Carrier possible means the condition is recessive: a dog can carry it without showing signs. Ask the breeder which tests the parent dogs had.
