Portrait of a Toy Bernedoodle, a small dog breed prone to hip and elbow dysplasia

Toy Bernedoodle

  • Small

The Toy is the smallest of PetMD's three Bernedoodle tiers, standing 12 to 17 inches and weighing under 20 pounds. It is also the longest-lived, at up to 18 years, which is a real difference from the larger sizes.

The Toy Bernedoodle is a Bernese Mountain Dog crossed with a Poodle, at the smallest of the three sizes PetMD names: 12 to 17 inches tall and under 20 pounds. No floor is published, so expect variation at the bottom of that.

Lifespan is where the tiers genuinely diverge. PetMD gives 12 to 18 years across the breed and says the Toy lives the longest, up to 18, against 14 to 16 for the Mini and 12 to 15 for the Standard. Smaller dogs living longer is the general rule and this cross follows it unusually clearly.

Character is the same at every size: fun-loving and outgoing, goofy, playful and gentle, and unusually easy company. Bernedoodles get on with children, other dogs and cats, and they are quiet, barking mainly when surprised or in play.

The coat is low-shedding and low-allergen, which is where the hypoallergenic reputation comes from, though no dog is truly free of allergens. A Toy Bernedoodle is easy to house in a small apartment, and its Poodle-heavy lineage means it usually leans further from the Bernese coat than a Standard does.

Care

The routines that matter most for this breed. Open one at a time.

Nutrition

A food that meets the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) nutrient profile for its life stage gives a Toy Bernedoodle a complete and balanced diet, and your vet is the right person to ask which brand suits your dog.

Split a puppy's food into three or four small meals at set times, and move to twice daily once it is grown. A single daily meal is technically possible but not advised: it tends to produce anxiety and a fixation on food, and a meal every twelve hours is better for both metabolism and temperament.

Portion size is the thing that scales down here. A Toy Bernedoodle eats a fraction of what a 100-pound one does, and there is no one-size-fits-all figure, so agree a feeding plan with your vet rather than reading across from a bigger dog.

If your dog eats too fast, a slow feeder is a cheap fix. Supplements are unnecessary on a balanced diet, though some Bernedoodles are given joint supplements against hip and elbow dysplasia; ask your vet before starting one.

Grooming

This is not a low-maintenance breed, whatever the size. A Toy Bernedoodle sheds little and pays for it with frequent brushing and regular professional grooming, and the smaller frame does not shorten the appointment much.

Brush every week and book grooming sessions on a standing basis to keep the coat tangle-free and stop it growing unruly. Brush the teeth daily with dog toothpaste as well, which matters at this size where dental disease is a common small-dog problem.

Bathe only when your dog is genuinely dirty and no more than once a month, or the skin dries out. Bernedoodles are outdoorsy and will find the mud, so this comes up.

Eyes need nothing special beyond keeping the hair around them from blocking vision or rubbing; cloudiness, redness or discharge are a vet call. Ears need cleaning after every swim, because trapped moisture and bacteria are what start an ear infection.

Exercise

Two walks a day is the baseline for any Bernedoodle, and a Toy is no exception even though the distance is shorter. It keeps the dog active, healthy and, importantly, entertained.

Give the mind work too. Games, snuffle mats and puzzle toys are part of the daily requirement, not optional extras, because a well-exercised body with an unoccupied mind still produces a restless dog.

Swimming, hiking, agility and obstacle courses all suit the breed and scale down fine. This size can do a short hike comfortably and is easy to carry over the parts it cannot.

A Toy Bernedoodle lives happily in a small apartment, which is the practical advantage of this tier. The breed is adaptable, and a well-exercised one fits almost any household.

Training

Bernedoodles are intelligent and want to please, and a Toy is quick to pick up basic cues, tricks, crate training and house training. Positive reinforcement is the method throughout.

Start leash training immediately. These dogs love their walks, and at Toy size a bad leash habit is easy to tolerate and therefore easy to leave unfixed for years.

Early and consistent training from a good start is what produces the sweet, settled adult the breed is known for. There is no shortcut and not much difficulty either; the work is mostly turning up.

Socialise around bigger dogs with care. Bernedoodles romp happily with other dogs, but a sub-20-pound one is at the wrong end of that in a group of large ones, so supervise the early meetings and keep them calm.

Health conditions

3 conditions are documented for the Toy Bernedoodle.

A predisposition is not a diagnosis. Ask your vet which screenings make sense for your dog's age.

May inherit from parent breeds

These conditions are documented in the parent breeds, not in this cross itself. Carrier possible means the condition is recessive: a dog can carry it without showing signs. Ask the breeder which tests the parent dogs had.
