The Portuguese Sheepdog is a medium-sized dog from Portugal with a rustic, sober look. Agile and swift, it stands about 16.5 to 21.5 inches tall and weighs roughly 37.5 to 59 pounds.
Its long hair has a goat-like texture with no undercoat, running straight or slightly wavy. The dense, even coat forms a long beard, mustache, and eyebrows, with the brows kept short enough not to cover the eyes. Coat colors include yellow, brown, grey, fawn, and wolf grey in shades from light to dark, plus black, with tan markings.
Intelligent, devoted, and lively by temperament, this breed has a simian look and attitude. That is why its native region of Portugal calls it the monkey dog. A typical lifespan runs about 12 to 13 years.

Care
The routines that matter most for this breed. Open one at a time.
Nutrition
The Portuguese Sheepdog does well on a high-quality dog food, whether commercially manufactured or home-prepared with your veterinarian's supervision and approval. Match the diet to your dog's life stage, whether puppy, adult, or senior, and keep clean, fresh water available at all times.
Some dogs are prone to gaining weight, so watch calorie intake. Portion food with a measuring cup and keep treats to no more than 10 percent of daily calories. Treats help with training, but too many can lead to weight gain.
Learn which human foods are safe for dogs and which are not, and check with your vet if you have any concerns about your dog's weight or diet.
Grooming
This single-coated breed needs brushing at least once a week to remove dead hair and prevent mats and tangles. Bathe the Portuguese Sheepdog occasionally to keep the coat clean.
The strong, fast-growing nails should be trimmed regularly with a clipper or grinder to avoid overgrowth, splitting, and cracking. Check the ears regularly to clear any buildup of wax and debris that can lead to infection.
Brush the teeth regularly and add occasional professional cleanings. Start these routines while your dog is a puppy so they become part of normal life.
Exercise
Portuguese Sheepdogs are moderately active. Regular walks several times a day, trips to the dog park, or games in a fenced backyard help keep them healthy and happy.
Indoor activities work too, such as hide-and-seek, chasing a ball rolled along the floor, or learning new tricks. Outdoor options like swimming, hiking, and retrieving balls or flying discs give them a good outlet.
Use dog sports such as agility, obedience, and rally for exercise, and add puzzle toys for mental work.
Training
These intelligent dogs take quickly to training. Keep them engaged with a consistent but varied routine built on positive reinforcement and rewards.
Socialization matters too. Introduce your dog to new people, pets, and places from a young age to help it grow into a well-mannered, well-adjusted companion.
