Origin
Sweden

The Swedish Lapphund is a lively, intelligent medium-sized spitz from Sweden. It stands 16 to 20 inches tall, weighs 30 to 45 pounds, and typically lives 12 to 14 years. Versatile and playful, it thrives when it is included in everything its human pack does.

This is a family companion that wants to be part of the action. Most owners describe it as a medium to high energy breed, but the Lappie has a useful on/off switch: active when there is work to do, then calm and settled when there is not.

Alert and friendly, the breed can also be independent-minded and a touch stubborn. It keeps the guarding and herding instincts of its background, including watchfulness and attention-getting barking, while staying eager to please and ready to work alongside you.

Care

The routines that matter most for this breed. Open one at a time.

Nutrition

The Swedish Lapphund does well on a high-quality dog food, whether commercially made or home-prepared with your veterinarian's supervision and approval. Match the diet to the dog's life stage, whether puppy, adult, or senior, and keep clean, fresh water available at all times.

Some of these dogs gain weight easily, so watch calorie intake and measure portions to avoid overfeeding. Treats help with training, but too many lead to weight gain. As a guideline, keep treats to no more than 10% of daily calories.

Learn which human foods are safe for dogs and which are not, and check with your vet if you have any questions about your dog's weight or diet.

Grooming

The Lappie carries a long double coat. Weekly brushing and an occasional bath keep it in good condition for most of the year. Never shave a Swedish Lapphund: the coat should stay at its full length year-round.

Once or twice a year the breed blows its undercoat, and shedding is heavy during these periods. Brush more often to keep loose fur under control, and a groomer can help with the volume.

Regular ear cleanings and nail trims belong in every grooming routine, and so does dental care. Set up an at-home program with regular teeth brushing and vet-recommended dental chews, alongside professional cleanings.

Exercise

The Swedish Lapphund benefits from daily exercise to match its medium to high energy. This intelligent, active breed needs regular mental and physical work, and a bored Lappie tends to find its way into mischief.

It is not a breed to leave alone for long stretches, and outdoors a fenced yard is a must. These dogs enjoy brisk walks, hikes, and chasing around the backyard.

They also take well to dog sports such as tracking, agility, and canine musical freestyle, which give the body and mind plenty to do.

Training

Swedish Lapphunds have an eager, curious nature that gives them a high level of trainability. The challenge is the independent mind and occasional stubborn streak, so training a Lappie takes a light hand, patience, and a sense of humor.

Be patient when teaching new commands, and use a gentle, reward-based approach that taps into the breed's eagerness to please. The Lappie suits herding, agility, obedience, and other companion sports.

Begin socialization early. Introduce your pup to different people and environments while young to help them grow into a predictable, well-mannered adult.
