The Sloughi is a classically built sighthound with ancient lineage, originally bred to work game like hare, fox, jackal, gazelle, and wild pigs across the punishing terrain of its North African homeland.
This is a lean, no-frills hound. It stands 24 to 29 inches at the shoulder and weighs 45 to 65 pounds. Coat colors run from light sand to mahogany red-fawn, with markings that may include brindling, black points, or neither, and white markings stay minimal.
The breed's large, dark eyes carry an expression many describe as melancholy. Reserved, graceful, and noble, the Sloughi typically lives 10 to 15 years.

Nutrition
The Sloughi has a naturally lean outline, so visible ribs or hip bones do not automatically mean that the dog is underweight. In the show ring, a fit Sloughi has defined bone and strong, lean muscle; the hip bones, rear three ribs, and three vertebrae may be visible. These landmarks can be normal for the breed, but they are not a target that every dog must meet. For show condition, the overall impression is hard and fit rather than soft or padded.
Choose food and portions for the individual dog's life stage and current condition. Monitor weight and body condition over time, and review changes or feeding concerns with a veterinarian. Keep clean, fresh water available, and check unfamiliar human foods before offering them.
Grooming
The Sloughi's short, smooth, fine coat needs little maintenance. Brush it once a week with a soft bristle brush or a hound glove to keep the coat sleek and healthy. An occasional bath keeps the hound clean-smelling.
Inspect the ears regularly and clean them if needed. Trim the nails as they grow, since overly long nails cause discomfort.
Brush the teeth at home and schedule professional cleanings.
Exercise
The Sloughi is calm and mannerly indoors, but as an active hunting breed it carries a high prey drive and needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. This athletic hound needs room to run flat out, preferably in a safely enclosed area.
The Sloughi is a fast runner and enjoys the chance to open up. Canine sports like lure coursing give the breed the mental and physical work it enjoys, and the Sloughi excels at them.
Training
The Sloughi is intelligent and loyal, with an aloof streak, and does best with caring, sensitive owners. It does not respond to harsh methods. Instead, use positive, reward-based training.
Some Sloughis are shy, while most are simply careful and cautious about their personal space. They have a strong sense of self, which shows clearly when they pursue games or face a real challenge.
Start training early and make socialization a priority. Introduce Sloughi puppies to new people and new situations from a young age. As with most sighthounds, take care whenever a Sloughi is off lead.
