Overview

Extra eyelashes can grow through the openings of small glands along the eyelid edge, a problem called distichiasis. Some lashes are so fine that they cause no irritation. Thicker or stiffer lashes may rub the cornea, the clear covering at the front of the eye. This can lead to watering, redness, squinting, and sometimes sores or scarring on the eye surface. The effect depends on the lashes and how they contact the eye.

Signs to watch for

  • Watery eyes
  • Frequent blinking or squinting
  • Redness around the eye surface
  • Sensitivity to light in more severe cases

Often noticed in young dogs; signs can begin at two to six months, but later onset also occurs.

When to get help Book a prompt vet visit for watering, redness, or squinting.

Diagnosis and tests

Diagnosis relies on finding extra lashes emerging from gland openings at the eyelid margin. Because the hairs may be tiny or difficult to distinguish, the vet examines the eyelid edge closely, often with magnification. An eye examination also checks whether the lashes have irritated or damaged the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye.

Inheritance

  • Multifactorial

Several genes and the environment together set the risk. Diet, growth rate, weight and exercise can all play a part. There is no single DNA test. Screening the parents (for example hip or elbow scores) and choosing from lines with good results lowers the risk, but does not remove it.
