The Portuguese Podengo Medio is a medium-sized hound from Portugal, the middle of the three Podengo sizes (slightly bigger than the Pequeno and slightly smaller than the Grande). It has a slender, square, well-proportioned body that is lean and muscular.

In temperament it is active and playful with its family, while often reserved around strangers. That watchfulness makes it a capable guard dog, as it readily barks when someone approaches the home. Some Podengos have a particularly piercing bark, so the breed may not be the best fit for close quarters such as an apartment.

The breed has deep roots. Thousands of years ago, Phoenicians are said to have brought Portuguese Podengos to the Iberian Peninsula from Asia Minor, after which the dogs became common in northern Portugal and were valued as both hunters and companions. Using keen senses to hunt vermin and rabbits, they earned passage aboard the ships of early explorers including Vasco da Gama and Magellan, where they protected food stores and crews from rodent-borne disease.

The routines that matter most for this breed. Open one at a time.

Nutrition

A Medium Portuguese Podengo can eat a high-quality commercial diet or a home-prepared diet made with veterinary supervision and approval. Food should match the dog's life stage, whether puppy, adult, or senior.

Calorie intake and body weight should be monitored, and training treats should remain limited because too many can contribute to obesity. A veterinarian should be consulted about weight or diet concerns. Clean, fresh water should always be available.

Grooming

Grooming depends on the coat. Wire-haired Podengos shed in sections, so brush them regularly to remove dead hair. Smooth-coated dogs need less work, and an occasional sweep with a brush is enough.

Give periodic baths and trim the nails about once a month. Check the ears often for wax buildup and debris.

Brush the teeth daily and schedule professional cleanings as needed.

Exercise

Medium Portuguese Podengos are keen runners and need plenty of physical activity as part of maintaining an even temperament. Racetracks and coursing events provide suitable outlets for that need to run. They also appreciate mental work and can do well in agility.

Their strong hunting drive means off-leash activity should take place only in secured areas. Exuberant play with compatible dogs offers another activity they enjoy.

Training

The Portuguese Podengo is bright and people-pleasing, a fast learner motivated by both fun and food. That said, its independent nature means it is not always easy to train. A firm, positive approach works best, paired with obedience classes started as early as possible.

Early socialization matters, too. Podengos are usually good with children when socialized young, and they generally enjoy the company of other dogs as the pack animals they are. The breed may view smaller animals as prey, and many Podengos like to dig.
